An faster tempo, tougher critics, unfamiliar rhythms, more aggressive performance standards.
When our inner strength is tested by new business imperatives, courage is the background music for the drama that unfolds. Even if we aren't aware of every note, courage sets the tone for the choices we make in the face of new challenges, change, relentless competition and uncertainty. Courage sets the tone when we have to execute before we feel ready, when it's easy to be silenced by louder and bolder voices, when it's easy to be thrown off by unfamiliar syncopation.
In the best of times, courage is nice to have. But when we face adversity and the inner strength of our teams is tested, courage is mission-critical.
Many leaders have already participated in training and development programs, received 360-degree feedback, worked with a coach. But when new moments of truth test our courage, we have to go beyond the sheet music we've mastered. It's here that we need the courage to take what we've learned to a higher level, to be at our best and perform optimally, even though conditions aren't ideal. And it's here that we can forget the training and coaching we received in conventional leadership programs.
